FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
WAKEFIELD, MA – On Sunday February 20th over 400 Judo athletes from over 12 states and three countries migrated to Wakefield High School for the 7th Annual Pedro’s Challenge Judo Tournament hosted by Jimmy Pedro’s Judo Center. Well-known in the judo community, Head Instructor and owner, Jimmy Pedro is a Four-Time Olympian (92, 96, 00 & 04) and two-time Olympic Bronze Medalist (96 & 04) and World Judo Champion. “Every year, I am more impressed with the level of competition.” Many other “Judo Celebrities” joined Pedro this year such as Jason Morris, who is an Olympic Silver Medalist (92), Parnell Legros, who represented Haiti at the 1992 Olympic Games, Kayla Harrison who just won the 2010 World Judo Championships and Rick Hawn who represented the US at the 2004 Olympic Games and is currently an undefeated Pro MMA Fighter. The Pedro’s Challenge is not only the second stop of the 2011 Zebra Tour but it is also a USA Judo E Level Event which allows the winner of the Black Belt division to earn one point on the USA Judo National Point Roster along with $250 in prize money.
With 40 athletes representing Jimmy Pedro’s Judo Center, as well as the “Pedro” name, athletes competed against top-notch competitors and a majority of the team earned themselves a medal. Assistant Coach, Carrie Chandler commented, “I’m extremely proud of the effort our students put in today. They [Pedro’s Judo Students] supported one another all day long and fed off of each other and showed a lot of Team Spirit.” Chandler finished by saying “I was very pleased that almost every student we had was competing in a medal round. I think it shows that is a very well rounded Dojo when our 4 year olds all the way up to our 54 year olds are competing for medals.” Pedro’s Judo locked up 10 gold, 7 silver and 9 bronze medals.
